Spot Cleaning & Stain Removal Guide

Ruggable rugs, mats, and pillow covers have different care needs, but spot cleaning is a simple way to handle minor spills and occasional stains. Use these steps to clean the affected area without doing a full wash.

Spot Cleaning Basics

  • Act Immediately: The faster you treat a spill, the easier it is to lift.

  • Blot, Treat Gently: Hard scrubbing can push the stain deeper into the fibers or alter the texture. Blot firmly with a clean, white (undyed) cloth, and follow the cleaning method for your product type.

  • Test First: Before applying any cleaner, test a small amount on an inconspicuous area to verify colorfastness.

Spot Cleaning Methods

Spot cleaning depends on the product and material. Follow the method for either machine-washable rugs, mats, and pillow covers or Easy Care Wool rugs.

Spot Cleaning Machine-Washable Rugs

For minor spills and stains, use either Ruggable Spot Cleaner & Stain Remover or a simple DIY cleaning solution.

Choose your cleaner:

  • Ruggable Spot Cleaner & Stain Remover: Our naturally derived formula is designed to break down stubborn stains and help remove odors from Ruggable textiles.

  • DIY solution: Mix 1 teaspoon of mild, clear liquid dish soap with 2 cups of cool water. Avoid colored dish soaps, bleach, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide or oxygen cleaners, and hot water. For wool rugs: Do not use baking soda or other alkaline cleaning mixtures.

Then follow these steps:

  1. Prep: Scrape away solid debris with a spoon or dull edge. Blot liquid spills with a clean, dry cloth. For larger or deeper spills, continue blotting for several minutes, switching to a fresh dry cloth as needed.

  2. Apply: Apply your chosen cleaner to the stained area. If using Ruggable Spot Cleaner on a dried or heavy stain, let it sit for 1–2 minutes.

  3. Treat: Gently work the cleaner into the fibers with a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush, then blot with a clean white cloth until the stain lifts. Do not scrub hard or use stiff or wire brushes.

  4. Rinse if needed: If using the DIY solution, lightly rinse with clean, cool water and blot until the soap residue is removed. Ruggable Spot Cleaner does not require rinsing.

  5. Dry: Allow the area to air-dry completely.

Spot Cleaning Easy Care Wool Rugs

Easy Care Wool rugs are naturally resistant to everyday soil and stains. For spills and small stains, use Ruggable Spot Cleaner & Stain Remover with a wool-safe method.

  1. Blot: Blot spills right away with a clean, dry, white (undyed) cloth, pressing firmly to absorb as much as possible. For larger or deeper spills, continue blotting for several minutes, switching to a fresh dry cloth as needed.

  2. Spot Test: Test the cleaner in an inconspicuous area first.

  3. Apply: Mist a small amount of cleaner onto the stain. Do not saturate the rug.

  4. Blot: Blot with a clean, white cloth until the stain lifts. Do not agitate, brush, rub, or scrub the fibers.

  5. Dry: Allow the area to air-dry completely.

For tough or set-in stains, use a professional wool rug cleaner. Do not rinse, hand-wash, steam clean, shampoo, or wet-extract Easy Care Wool rugs at home.
