How to Make Your Home an Oasis of Inspiration and Creativity Like Justina Blakeney

Alex French - 2024-04-12

Do you consider yourself a creative person? Justina Blakeney does. According to her, we’re all creative but we don’t always have spaces that allow us to tap into that creativity. That starts first and foremost with our homes. As Justina says, “Our homes are meant to be places that express who we are and how special we are.” But how can you turn your home into a sanctuary of self-expression and an oasis of inspiration like Justina did? Read on for our top five tips!

Say Goodbye to Bland Walls

Color is one of the quintessential aspects of Justina’s personal design aesthetic. “When I walk into a space and there’s vibrancy, that really lights me up and brings me joy,” she says. You can follow her lead in adding vibrancy and inspiration to any room by washing the walls in color. Opt for an earthy terracotta or underwater teal for full submersion.

Design a Dedicated Brainstorming Area

Although inspiration can strike anywhere, it’s helpful to encourage brainstorming sessions and spontaneous creativity by setting up a specific area for it. Mirror Justina’s approach and fill your cozy corner with a large corkboard or easel, comfortable seating, plenty of inspiring books or magazines, and art supplies like paint, pastels, markets, or pencils.

Surround Yourself With Inspiring Art

Which artists do you admire? Stay inspired by surrounding yourself with their art — whether that’s music, paintings, books, style, or vibes. It’ll help foster a sense of connection and appreciation for their talent, which will no doubt help you express your own. Fun fact: Justina paid homage to her artistic influences by naming all of her Ruggable x Justina Blakeney rugs after them.

Opt for Hanging Plants

By installing floating shelves or macrame plant hangers you can showcase indoor greenery and fill otherwise empty space. Pothos or spider plants are perfect for maximizing vertical space, adding texture to your home, and reducing stress with natural beauty. Like Justina says, “The more we can commune with nature, the better.”

Lean Into Natural Lighting

You may not be a plant, but sunlight is good for you too. Enhance natural lighting around your home with sheer curtains or by fully opening curtains and blinds to really let the sun in. Directing sunlight indoors is a surefire recipe for a welcoming and energizing atmosphere conducive to free-spirited expression.

Once your home is set, all that’s left is…creating. Try not to build it up! Remember, you don’t need to create a masterpiece; you’re just trying to create. And the best way to do that is by getting out of your own way. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. In Justina’s words, “Being able to get creative at home is about feeling comfortable and not having to worry that you're going to ruin something.” Luckily, we’ve got you covered with the washable, easy-to-clean designs of our Ruggable x Justina Blakeney Collection. Explore all the new rugs and start creating!
