Spot Cleaning & Stain Removal Guide

While Ruggable rugs, mats and pillow covers are fully machine-washable, but spot cleaning is a great way to treat minor spills between washes. Use these steps to lift everyday stains quickly without running a full wash cycle.

Core Rules for Spot Treating

  • Act Immediately: The faster you treat a spill, the easier it is to lift.

  • Blot, Never Scrub: Rubbing or scrubbing pushes the pigment deeper into the performance fibers and alters the fabric texture. Always blot firmly with a clean, white, color-safe cloth.

  • Default to Cold Water: Hot water permanently sets most organic and protein-based stains. Use cool or cold water unless specified.

  • Perform a Patch Test: Before applying any cleaner, test a small amount on an inconspicuous area to verify colorfastness.

  • For Pads and Inserts: Do not submerge Rug Pads or Pillow Inserts. Wipe them clean with a cloth dampened with cool water and a few drops of mild soap, then air dry completely.

Cleaning Workflows

Our plant-derived, enzyme-powered formula is specifically engineered and tested to break down stubborn stains and eliminate tracking odors on Ruggable textiles.

  1. Apply: Spray directly onto the stain until saturated. For dried or heavy stains, let sit for 1–2 minutes.

  2. Agitate & Blot: Gently work the formula into the fibers with a soft cloth or brush, then blot firmly with a clean white towel until the stain lifts.

  3. Dry: Allow to air dry. No rinsing required.

Please note that our Spot Cleaner cannot be purchased on its own and requires a minimum order total of $50 to checkout. Additionally, the Spray Cleaner is final sale and is not eligible for returns or exchanges.

Method B: DIY Spot Cleaning Solution

If you do not have Ruggable Spot Cleaner on hand, use this baseline method for everyday spills:

  1. Prep: Scrape away solid debris with a spoon or dull edge. Blot liquid spills with a dry paper towel.

  2. Mix: Combine 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap with 2 cups of cool water.

  3. Dab: Dampen a cloth with the mixture and dab the stain from the outside edges moving inward.

  4. Rinse: Flush the area with a small amount of clean, cool water. Blot repeatedly until all soap residue and bubbles are entirely removed.

Specific Stain Tips

If a stain persists using the master workflows, apply these targeted treatments before washing the cover.

Stain Type

Treatment Strategy

Wine & Coffee

Blot up excess liquid with a paper towel, then dab with fresh water until pigment stops transferring to the cloth. Treat the remaining stain with Ruggable Spot Cleaner or a DIY mixture of a few teaspoons of dish soap and 1–2 cups of cool water. Dab to lift the stain, repeat until gone, then rinse thoroughly to remove all residue and soak up excess liquid.

Hot Sauce

Scoop up excess sauce with a spoon, then lightly blot with a paper towel. Treat the area with Ruggable Spot Cleaner or a DIY mixture of 1–2 teaspoons of liquid laundry detergent and 1 cup of warm water. Blot to lift the stain, repeat until gone, then rinse thoroughly to remove all residue and soak up excess liquid.

Ketchup & Tomato

Scoop up excess sauce with a spoon or dull knife, then blot lightly with a paper towel. Treat the area with Ruggable Spot Cleaner or a DIY mixture of a few teaspoons of dish soap and 1–2 cups of cool water. Dab to lift the stain, repeat until gone, then rinse thoroughly to remove all residue and soak up excess liquid.

Chocolate

Remove excess chocolate with a spoon or dull knife (if dried, scrape and vacuum first). Treat the area with Ruggable Spot Cleaner or a DIY mixture of 1–2 teaspoons of liquid laundry detergent and 1 cup of warm water. Dab to lift the stain, repeat until gone, then rinse thoroughly to remove all residue and soak up excess liquid.

Oils & Grease

Absorb excess oil with a paper towel, then sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda over the spill. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes and vacuum it up. Treat the area with mixture of a few teaspoons of dish soap and 1–2 cups of cool water. Dab to lift the oil, repeat until gone, then rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue and soak up excess liquid.

Blood

Dab the stain from the outside inward with cold water until blood stops transferring, being careful not to oversaturate and spread the stain. If the stain remains, treat with a mixture of a few teaspoons of dish soap and 1–2 cups of cold water. Blot from the edges inward until gone, then rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue and soak up excess liquid.

Pet Urine

Blot up excess liquid with a paper towel. Mix a few teaspoons of liquid dish soap with 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of cool water. Vinegar will help neutralize any odors.

Mud & Dirt

Allow any moisture in the mud or dirt to dry completely, then vacuum the area before spot cleaning. Apply mixture of 1 teaspoon liquid laundry detergent and 1–2 cups of warm water using a damp cloth. Dab the soiled area to remove the dirt, then rinse with cool, clean water to clear away any loose debris.

Ballpoint Pen Ink

Apply mixture of a few teaspoons of liquid dish soap and 1–2 cups of cool water. Spray or apply with a color-safe cloth, dab to lift the ink, and repeat until the ink disappears before rinsing thoroughly.

Drying Techniques

To prevent water rings and accelerate drying times after spot treating:

  • For Rug Covers: Lay a clean, dry bath towel over the damp area. Apply heavy pressure by stepping or standing on the towel. For deep moisture extraction, place a fresh, dry towel over the spot and weigh it down with a heavy object for 30–60 minutes.

  • For Pillow Covers: Unzip the cover, blot the damp area firmly from both sides with a dry towel, and ensure the fabric is completely dry before reinserting the pillow insert.

Note: If a visible stain shadow remains after executing these targeted spot-cleaning steps, simply remove the cover and machine-wash it according to the standard Ruggable care instructions.
