Ruggable Play Mat Care Guide

The Ruggable Play Mat’s sealed foam surface wipes clean on the floor in minutes using just warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth—no machine washing needed.

How to Clean the Play Mat

Choose the cleaning method that matches your (kids') mess:

  • Sweep - Daily Care: Shake out crumbs and clear loose debris with a dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush. You can also vacuum, as long as the brushroll is turned off but avoid robot vacuums.

  • Wipe - Routine Upkeep: Wipe the surface clean with a soft, wet cloth. For heavier messes, mix a few drops of mild dish soap into warm water and work the solution across the surface in gentle circular motions. Wipe away residue with a clean, damp cloth, then dry thoroughly.

  • Disinfect - As Needed: Use a non-bleach disinfectant. Wipe the surface, follow with a clean damp cloth, and dry.

  • Spills - Act Fast: Blot the spill immediately, then wipe clean. The longer a spill sits, the higher the risk of staining.

  • Trapped Mess - Get in the Groove: Messes can settle into the mat's embossed texture. Gently bend the mat backward at the spot to open the grooves, then scrub firmly in  circular motions with a cloth or paper towel. Note: Our testing confirms firm scrubbing won't damage the surface or the print.

  • Stubborn Stains - Spot Treat: Mix 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water into a thick paste. Apply to the stain, let it sit for 60 seconds, then wipe clean. Repeat if necessary.

Pro Tips:

  • Always test any new cleaner on a small, hidden area before applying it to the entire mat.

  • Abrasive sponges, including melamine foam or "magic eraser" style sponges, can wear the surface, so always use a soft cloth instead.

  • Avoid solvents like acetone, nail polish remover, and alcohol-based cleaners, which can damage the surface.

Regular Double-Sided Care

Because Ruggable Play Mats are double-sided, remember to flip yours regularly to clean both sides—and don't forget the floor underneath.

  1. Clear the Floor: Lift the mat and set it aside. Vacuum or mop the floor beneath it as usual.

  2. Wipe the Underside: Wipe the bottom of the mat with a soft, wet cloth, then dry completely.

  3. Dry Before Laying Flat: Ensure both the mat and the floor are completely dry before laying it back down. Trapped moisture can damage certain flooring finishes over time.

Dealing with Stubborn Stains

The Play Mat is wipeable, but it is not stain proof if stains are left untreated. In our testing, hot sauce, sriracha, mustard, and permanent marker were the hardest messes to remove after 90 minutes of sitting.

As a rule, treat vivid and oily foods with care: berries, tomato-based sauces, turmeric, food coloring, and ink. Wipe them up quickly and the mat will stay looking new.
