Are you wondering, "can I put a rug on carpet?" or looking for creative ways to enhance the look of your space? Layering rugs on carpeted floors can be a game-changer.

Read on to explore the art of layering rugs on carpet as well as how this trend can elevate your home decor and add a touch of personality to your space.

Pros and Cons of Using Rugs on Carpet

In many cases, carpeted floors, particularly in rental properties, are primarily utilitarian. Wall-to-wall carpeting offers a versatile, durable surface that reduces noise. However, the aesthetic appeal of a room with plain-colored carpet and white walls may be lacking.

This is where layered rugs come in. Introducing a rug to a carpeted room not only enhances the visual interest of your living space but also offers a variety of other benefits.

Pros:

- Enhanced aesthetics and visual appeal – Add personality and character to your space.

- Added warmth and comfort – rugs add extra thickness to thin carpets and offer better insulation.

- Protection for the underlying carpet – whether it’s a rented place or you have expensive carpets, a rug will protect the carpet from wear, tear, and stains.

- Hide stubborn stains  – Rugs can help to cover up old carpets, updating your space without replacing dated carpet or causing further damage.

Cons:

- Potential for slippage and safety hazards – Layering rugs can cause uneven floors which can pose a trip hazard.

- Maintenance challenges – Shedding rugs can require more vacuuming.

- Potential for trapping unwanted grime – More fibers mean more room for dust and dirt to accumulate so will need more cleaning to prevent a build up of dust and debris.

Factors to Consider Before Using Rugs on Carpet

Carpet Type and Pile Height

For the safest use, we advise against placing a rug on a carpet with a high pile. Doing so can pose a safety risk, as an area rug on a long-pile or soft carpet may lack sufficient support, potentially causing tripping hazards or sliding underfoot. However, the use of a rug pad, such as those found with Ruggable rugs, can provide the necessary support and prevent the rug from shifting, when placed on a low-pile carpet. Additionally, employing rug tape or placing the rug under furniture ensures the rug remains anchored in place.

Room Functionality

In selecting a rug to place over carpet, your choice should be influenced by the room's function and level of activity. When a room experiences high foot traffic, it is advisable to secure the rug firmly with furniture to prevent it from shifting.

Rug Material

In order to create a layered look that is also safe and comfortable to walk on while also looking good you need to consider the materials. The material of the carpet needs to be firm enough to support the rug and have a short pile to prevent wrinkles and shifting. The rug will need a supportive rug pad to give it structure and offer non-slip properties.

Aesthetics and Style

If your carpet is plain, then you might want to choose an area rug that has a striking or bold pattern. However, if your carpet has a pattern of its own, then opting for a more subtle rug in a complementary color will provide balance. If applying pattern over pattern, ensure to vary scale. Try a detailed, ornate rug over a larger carpet pattern, or a bold plaid rug over a more subtly textured carpet.  Layering rugs on a carpet can be a great way to introduce style and texture to a living space.
