The art deco movement is the epitome of luxury, glamour, and elegance — think cocktails in coupes, jewel-box tones, and touches of chrome. One of the most far-reaching design movements of the 20th century, art deco has touched architecture, fashion, illustration, textiles, and so much more. The Hollywood Roosevelt, the Chrysler Building, and even The Wizard of Oz are the result of an enduring influence of art deco. And since we all could use a dose of indulgence in our everyday lives, it comes as no surprise that this aesthetic is having a major revival right now, for 2025.

In collaboration with Architectural Digest, our latest collection nods joyfully towards the era of art deco opulence with modern interpretations of classic designs. This newly-expanded collection of rugs hits the balance between the elegance of early modernism and the bold patterns and colors of midcentury revival. Whether you’re going full Gatsby or simply bringing in a few charming details, here are some practical tips to incorporate modern art deco decor into your home.

What Is Art Deco Decor?

Initially known as le style moderne, what we now know as art deco style became internationally recognized in 1925, thanks to the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, France. A continuation of the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements, art deco style was widely celebrated for its modernity, luxury, and sophistication.

Much like today, the early 20th century saw rapid changes, both socially and economically. The ornate beauty and handmade quality that defines the art deco movement is a direct reaction to the rise of modern industrialism and mass production. Claire Pickney, our Manager of Design Trend Forecasting, offers sage perspective on art deco’s current resurgence: “Globally, we are living through turbulent times. Art deco’s ability to embody both indulgence and practicality resonates deeply with the desires and constraints of today’s consumers. Art deco’s extravagance stands as both a symbol of optimism and a balm for turbulent times.”

Art Deco Style for Today

The essence of art deco style is that of grand-scale elegance in materials and design. Our refreshed take incorporates the spirit of luxury alongside a curated edit of style influences. The drama of art deco is easily defined by its shapes and materials—think fluted columns in shining chrome; lacquered wood; tufted velvet; mirrored surfaces. The category is: glittering, gilded opulence.

The updated art deco revival trend marries its original characteristics and incorporates contemporary styles. Keeping with the principles of symmetry, geometric lines in vivid colors and precise patterns brings an element of energetic sophistication into any living space. We’re reimagining the drama of a bygone era with updated touches that can scale to any space.

Curate with Restraint

The beauty of the art deco movement is that its influence can be integrated anywhere, from light fixtures to area rugs. Opt for an edit of inspired pieces. Says Claire, “a single statement element—like a lacquered table, metallic vase, or abstract artwork—can anchor the deco vibe without overwhelming the space.”

Incorporate Modern Materials

Offset the traditional glam of art deco by bringing contrasting elements together. To complement a high-shine lacquered wood sideboard, consider upholstery in a soft, matte texture like velvet. Consider the principle of chiaroscuro, the treatment of light and dark in drawing and painting. A geometric border rug in a rich blue can anchor the room when paired with warm neutrals and hints of metallic.

Layer with Organic Shapes

Art deco works are often linear, geometric, and bring a sense of symmetry. Claire suggests “breaking up the angularity of deco motifs by incorporating rounded or freeform shapes.” A curved sofa and a spherical pendant can do wonders to soften up the space.
