Ahh, can you smell it? Fresh flowers…new leaves…high-powered cleaning supplies. Spring is officially in the air! If you’re like most people, one of those scents may not fill you with joy. But spring cleaning doesn’t have to be scary. In fact, it can be downright rejuvenating. Still, that doesn’t make it any easier to get started. That’s why we turned to GoCleanCo founder Sarah McAllister to get her tips on the best way to approach the yearly ritual of spring cleaning.

How do you get motivated for spring cleaning?

Spring cleaning is a pretty big deal here at GoCleanCo. It’s a chance to reset your whole home after a winter of being stuck indoors. Once you get everything spick-and-span, it’s so much easier to do the upkeep during the summer months when you want to be outside enjoying the sunny weather. My advice for getting started on spring cleaning is to do one room at a time. Gather all your supplies first, and don’t leave that room until it’s done. If you bounce around from room to room, you’ll get distracted and waste time. We also find our tested method creates a domino effect throughout your home. Once one room is spotless, you’ll feel so great about it that you’ll have the energy to tackle the rest.

So which room should we start with?

I like to start with the worst room first. Usually, that’s the kitchen, which is a huge job. But once it’s out of the way, cleaning the bathroom seems easy. Lots of people put off the worst room until last, but I find that’s daunting and you end up dreading it. Once you’ve cleaned a kitchen from top to bottom, you’ll have the confidence to clean anything!

Once you’ve decided which room you’re cleaning, what’s your strategy?

When starting a room, you want to work left to right, top to bottom. That way nothing gets missed, and the dust floating down from your ceiling fan doesn’t end up on your freshly washed bed. That being said, if you have a Ruggable rug in your room, put it in the wash when you start the room, and it’ll be fresh and clean for you by the time you’re done.

How often do you clean your rugs?

Rugs getting dirty is just a fact of life. But Ruggable rugs are so easy to take care of. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen me clean all kinds of spills from my rugs. From pumpkin pie to melted chocolate to muddy footprints, my rugs have seen it all, so I know a thing or two about getting them clean. I wash all of my rugs twice a year. Once during spring cleaning, and again during fall cleaning or, of course, when major spills happen.

What’s something that people always forget to clean?

Washing machines! I see so many moldy rubber seals and stinky washing machines at work. And when your machine is smelly and gross, your clothes (and your Ruggable rugs!) are not getting washed properly. We often overlook that the machines in our homes need to be cleaned and maintained so they run efficiently and properly. Your HE washing machine has a “clean” cycle for a reason!

And lastly, what are three cleaning hacks most people don’t know about?

#1. Getting a start on spring cleaning is the hardest part! Get your family involved, delegate tasks to everyone, and keep track of your progress. Make a checklist and follow through with each job. People tend to get discouraged and overwhelmed, so they don’t even bother starting. Cleaning can be fun! You just need the right tools for the job to work smarter, not harder.

#2. Focus on how good everyone in your home is going to feel when your house is spotless! That’s the true reward after all your hard work.

#3. Putting your Ruggable on the Pad when it’s still slightly damp makes it easier to lay flat. It’ll have fewer wrinkles and air bubbles that way.
