Sometimes creativity bubbles up from within. Sometimes it is sparked by another artist’s work. Sometimes it blossoms out of a conversation or challenge from a friend, author, or text. Regardless of the initial ignition, the flywheel of inspiration is propelled by what we surround ourselves with, especially in our homes. For Justina Blakeney, artist, designer, and founder of Jungalow, decorating wild ensures she remains inspired and free to create, anywhere, anytime. Our brand new Ruggable x Justina Blakeney Collection of playful, washable rugs makes decorating wild and staying inspired a breeze.

To celebrate her new collection, Justina shares a few simple tips on how to update your space so you feel inspired, empowered, and ready to create!

Find Your Vibe

When it comes to designing with color, Justina looks to her own instincts. “Sometimes if I'm not sure about what color to use somewhere, I like to shut my eyes for a minute and just imagine places that make me feel really relaxed, or really happy. I just tune in to that feeling and think about the colors that I see when I’m in those places. I like to bring those colors into the spaces that I design.” For a welcoming, encouraging space, opt for warm colors like terracotta, soft tangerine, golden turmeric, sunshine yellow or forest green (like in our Justina Blakeney Georgia Kaleidoscope Rug). Or for a more contemplative, calming vibe, add deeper teal, midnight blue, olive green, or plum purple to your palette (like in our Justina Blakeney Josephine Midnight Rug).

Feed Your Soul

A home is not complete without plantlife. According to Justina, plants “are the soul of the home. They help bring the space to life!” Not only do they help you commune with nature, but they also remind us of the beautiful cycle of life through their organic growth and silhouettes. Go wild with palms and other tropical plants for a jungalicious feel. Or if low maintenance is more your pace, decorating with plant-inspired patterns can bring the outside in, without a green thumb.

Layer the Love

You don’t have to be a maximalist to decorate wild and enjoy color. A pared down palette or minimally designed space can still bloom with layered textures and colors for maximum inspiration. Try introducing color through floral arrangements, wall paint, or throw pillows. Varying the scale of texture and pattern in your space provides visual interest and layered depth. While the woven texture of our Justina Blakeney Etta Natural & Terra Rug may feature a more natural and neutral color palette, it can provide organic texture and a hand-made feel to a contemporary or modern space.

Go Slow

Free-spirited style doesn’t come with a stopwatch. Decorating slowly leaves space physically and mentally for a room to evolve. Our spaces grow with us, so rushing to an imaginary finish line can result in uninspired, meaningless decor. Remind yourself that no space is ever final. This freeing, empowering mindset can lead to more experimentation, inspiration, and self expression over a longer period of time. Take risks. Allow yourself to change your mind. See what your space has in store for you, instead of forcing it to fit a pre-prescribed vision or cookie-cutter standard. There is always more to discover, enjoy, experience, and create. Take the time to enjoy the journey that your own home takes you on!

Our new collection of Justina Blakeney rugs features designs, compositions, and artistic explorations straight from Justina’s studio. We can’t wait to see how you decorate wild with these washable wonders.
